Oct 2007
Jim Knodle came over the other day, (well actually it was night but who can tell the difference in a studio?!?!) and sprinkled some tastey trumpet parts all over our version of 'Compliment'. Ummmm, they're so yummy I'm thinking of passing them out on Halloween. Sweeeeet....
Also, since my computer died a sudden and unexpected death in July, I had to (yippee!!!) get another. Now I find it won't run some of my software (like an ancient version of Go Live, which in spite of it's 'obsolescence' did all I needed it to, and more), so I bought a brand new, extra kool version of Dreamweaver!!! Sadly, when I grabbed it, I didn't notice that it was for Windows not Mac. I didn't notice until after I'd opened it, which means they wouldn't take it back... Three weeks later and lots of paperwork explaining what a space cadet I must be, Adobe sent me something I can actually use.... sorta. Band Of Toy and Strictly Background pages can't be far behind.
September 12, 2007
We've been having tons o' fun working on 'Compliment', The Posies tune we're submiting for Burning Sky Record's "Beautiful Escape: The Ultimate Tribute to The Posies" . This is a very kool project . You can check it out at: http://www.myspace.com/theposiestributealbum .
Of course it's taking longer than I thought it would but I'm finally falling in love with our version of this song off 'Failure'. It all started falling into place when my friend Amy Denio brought over a brushed steel, water filled, percussion cube that someone made and gave her . How can something so square be so freaky?!?!?!? It was love at first splosh.... It's heavier than shit to play for an entire song but we took turns sloshing and tapping that thing, uh huh, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to Phil and Thy (and baby makes three) for shaking and pounding on the round stuff.
August 2007
On the music front, we had a great time playing 'Billapalooza' on the 28th. With lots of good music, yummy brews, roosters and goats (Poncho and Lefty), glimpses of Jupiter and the surface of the Moon, who could ask for anything more ?!?!?!? Not it.
Congrats to the Beneficiaries on their new CD 'Embrace' ! I love you guys....
May 2007
Thanks to the wonderful people at CD Baby (xoxoxo) we now have a SNOWCAP digital store on our MySpace page. For some reason that makes me very happy, and how can that be wrong ?!??!
On a not quite so happy note, our friends at Marked Magizine have decided to call it quits, on to new and wonderful things we hope, so I'm posting the Q&A we did with them here instead. We loved you and we'll miss you Marked Magizine......
Daughters of Joy Q & A
Daughters of Joy started as "three nice girls, with a penchant for nasty grooves", and grew into a collaboration of some of Seattle's most diverse musicians. With a sound ranging from rock to blues to spoken word poetry, the first album, "In A Sense", paints incredible pictures narrated by the smooth voice of creator Brenda Scallon. She let us pick her brain for this month's Q & A session:
1. Where did the name "Daughters of Joy" come from?
I fell in love with the name because while it conjures an impression of innocence, it's the term used for prostitutes during the 'Wild West' era, and represents, to me, an exploration of the binary opposition saint/whore construct.
2. How would you describe your sound?
"Avanternative", which is a word I made up that includes, but is not limited to: jazz, pop, thrash, folk, county, and math rock...
3. Any pre-performance rituals?
I have a collection of small artifacts that I set-up on the top of my amphead, to relax me and inspire me to dig deeper.
4. Who were some of your influences?
Wow, that's a long list! Patsy Cline, The Posies, Kate Bush, Kate Hepburn, Van Gogh, Van Vlet, Robert Fripp, Brand X, Chrissie Hynde, The Split Enz, Alice Coltrane, Bukowski, Benny Goodman, Bread, Jimi Page, and The Funk Brothers, to name a few.
5. Who is your favorite superhero?
My Dad, for facing the mundane and unglamourous every day to keep food on the table, books on the shelves and instruments within reach.
6. What social issue is close to your heart?
Street kids, orphaned by disease or natural disaster, or forced there via war, or physical, emotional or sexual abuse at 'home', are, for me, top priorities. Who knew Microsoft would be part of the solution ?!?! Props to head Softie, Bill Gates. So, let's see what you got, Google.... red flags should appear if Monsanto or any oil executives offer 'help,'.
7. What is one thing you wish you invented?
A device that allowed people to speak and understand all languages.
8. If you weren't playing music, what would you rather be doing?
Painting, and/or making films, (I sometimes make films about painting).
9. What was the best movie you saw recently?
Turtles Can Fly, a film by Bahman Ghobadi a Kurdish filmmaker. It was deeply moving, heartbreakingly real, and oddly uplifting. Tragedy and humor combine seamlessly to present a story of brutal beauty. Incredible….
10. What was your craziest job growing up?
I was once a currier and occasionally had to transport body parts for
transplantation. It was pretty crazy walking through the airport carrying someone else's kidney!
April 2007
Lot's of marathon painting sessions and then that strange, miraculous sensation of thrusting the work out into the world to share with friends and be analyzed by strangers... It's so freaky to see the pieces through other peoples eyes, via their mouths. Ya know what I mean ?!?!? I knew you did. That's why I love you ....
March 2007
Re:Evolution
Wow, not much musical news, since all I've done for the past couple months is paint, although I did do a small painting of someone playing music.... I can tell I'm missing it.
I'm excitedly looking forward to an April 28th opening, after which, I'll have some time to get back to the video and sonic projects that have been waiting so patiently for their turns.
February 2007
Valentine...
LOVE
A repeated test of questioned truth
A fortress of surrender
A gentle battleground, wherein the tender
Begins the dance that hypnotizes us both.
Fear and anticipation, juggled with ease
In hands offering to please. Please, please,
Be the one to love like I do.
Yes, love....
Oct.- Jan 2006
I spent most of my time in my painting studio instead of the recording studio. Also my Mom had some health scares so I spent some tense times in the Bay Area with the folks, and yes everything turned out fine. Thanks for asking!
September 2006
Check out our latest review by the lovely Katie Sauro for 'The Wig Fits All Heads' at www.thewigfitsallheads.com/daughtersofjoy_review_album.html . She has nice things to say about us plus it inspired me to check out the band 'Morcheeba'... Dig it!
Also if you haven't yet and want to, we did a Q&A with Marked Magazine for their July debut which you can check out at http://markedmagazine.com/2006July-QA-daughters-of-joy.shtml. Getting to knoooow you, getting to know all about you....
Oh yeah, and about the bears... Bears are related to the dog family, but most species are omnivorous, so use caution when approaching....
August/ Sept 2006
So I've been messing with imovie just to see what it will do (it's pretty rudimentary but simple and cheap) and put together a clip of the Jon Auer show I was talking about in June. Check it out ...
I can't wait to get back to Final Cut Pro!
I saw Frank Black at a small club in Bellingham, Wa , which was good fun, and Pat Benatar and Neil Geraldo at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, which was horrible. Not that they didn't bring it (they did!) but the venue was so depressing. To get to the 'Showroom' I walked for about a block and a half, through room after room of electronic slot machines , with the occasional Black Jack or Craps table thrown in, all of which were packed and no where did I see anyone winning. Or smiling , or having fun of any kind. I finally got to the 'Showroom' which was basically a glorified Quonset Hut , filled with folding chairs and masses.... ugh. Very Spinal Tapish....
July 2006
Whoopee! We finally got our MySpace page up, with a lot of help , (thank you Jude!!!) The addy is : http://www.myspace.com/daughtersofjoyyeah. So now I'm trying to keep both this page and that one updated, while trying to get our Strictly Background Productions web page up and running... Cyber domination can't be too far behind, right ? Rock 'N F#%kin Roll, baby!
June 2006
A couple of truely exciting things happened this month. My friend bought himself an 1890's church in Bellingham, Wa, (which is a couple of hundred miles north of Seattle), then spent the next four years refurbishing it . Now it's his home and studio and , as of this spring, a performance space! So, we piled ourseves and a P.A. and my trusty camera, into a Mazda hatchback, and made our way up North to catch Jon Auer ( The Posies), preach the gospel of Pure Pop. Gorgeous.... Great venue, awesome show, good times! I'll be putting together something to share with the whole class .... I promise.
Also , I did an interview for the July 1st edition of Marked Online Music Magazine. This is their premier issue and we're honored and excited to be included . Check them (and us!) out at markedmagazine.com.
April/ May 2006
Good news, we've sold out of the first run of the 'Second Time Around- A Tribute to the Posies' CD and raised $375.00 for the Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood! Good on y'all! Now I'm gearing up to do a second run, so if you haven't gotten yours yet you can still order one by emailing me at daughtersofjoy@excite.com. I'm listening to it right now . Damn, it still sounds good, even after hearing it eight trillion times! Good, good, good. I've also been working on a project with my good friend Grace Dager called 'Band Of Toy' , a collection of battery operated toys (like Furbys and Chatty Kathy) deconstructed and reconstructed as fragmented mutant refugees who perform 'arias of chaotic clammer'. Brilliant. And - don't roll your eyes!- I'm in preproduction for the 'A Drive' video ! I've watched it so many times in my head that I can hardly wait to see how it translates to life in video form. I've had some recent revelations to facilitate that, with lightbulbs coming on as I stumble over the obvious, and finally recognize it. See, all that staring at the ceiling, and out the window, pays off.
Mar 2006
What the ?!?! What happened to March? Oh yeah, I finished the 'Second Time Around- A Tribute To the Posies' CD project and it came out swimmingly. With seventeen different bands, from seven different countries, ( France, England, Sweden, The Neatherlands, Belgium, Australia, and both coasts of the US) , it's one of the koolest, kookiest, most diverse compilations I've ever heard. Good stuff, indeed! For ordering info, Drop me a line at daughtersofjoy@excite.com
Feb 2006
See, just like I said. Updates... The Posies Compilation project I just assumed, is coming right along. It's good to hear all the weird, wonderful versions of the songs that people have submitted. Of course the song we're submitting needed some tweaking.... Funny story; when we recorded our version of 'Everybody Is A Fucking Liar', I was just learning Digital Performer. After recording the basic tracks and a vocal , I did a couple quick mixes, then decided I'd try this great memory saving feature called Compacting..... 'Compacting' removes files that aren't being used then moves everything around to fill in the gaps. Great right? When it was taking longer than I thought it should , never the patient one, I tried to stop it in the middle of doing what it does. Bad idea, because it completely scrambled everything, and didn't leave me anything to work with but the two rough mixes I'd done earlier. I wasn't too upset (yeah right...) because everything sounded pretty good, except the part where I screwed up the lyrics by singing 'must dishonesty jeopardize trust.', Instead of 'must honesty jeopardize trust....' Damn. So be it. I guess that's what's known as 'making it your own'. Anyway , I dropped the two different mixes into separate tracks, EQ'd the crap out of them trying to pull out more drums, and added some more vocals. Done. Well, as I was preparing to Master all the other songs that have been submitted, I came across a really early, pre-vocal version of 'EIAFL' we'd done with just drums, guitar and a click track,. I was able to harvest a couple drum parts from it and pump up the percussive side of things. Better. I'll be posting track listings and ordering info for the CD soon. It's called 'Second Time Around- A Tribute To the Posies', and besides sounding pretty darned good, the proceeds will go to a charity chosen by Ken's mom (ahhhhhhh, nice).
January 2006
Oh my much neglected site!?!?! Did you miss me? Well, I haven't finished the video for "A Drive" yet, but I've finished a couple others while I solidify the storyboarding, site surveying and 'crew' necessary to pull it off. Hey, as much as I'd love to be able to, I can't do everything myself.... I've also agreed to take on a Posies Compilation project that the DOJ and a myriad of other bands, submitted songs to over a year ago. The original producer had some personal turmoil to deal with and had to relinquish his involvement with the project..... ( I love you Kelly and hope things work out for you). It needs to be mastered, then the mighty Strictly Background Productions team can step in and facilitate the distribution. I'll keep you posted as things progress. No really, I promise to be more diligent with my updates.
June 2005
Started work on the video for "A Drive". I'm so excited.
April, May 2005
April was focused on film, Wiggly World and the NW Film Forum. . I've worked with video but never film. I've collected and watched miles and miles of it, over the years though. It's such a gelatinously wonderful art form. Soft and organic and scientific. May, we went to Vietnam and celebrated Phil and Thuy's wedding ( you go drummer boy!!!) in Ho Chi Minh City ( used to be Siagon) , then headed to Mui Ne on the coast for some quality time on the beach.
Jan, Feb, March 2005
I guess I've been a bit distracted the past couple months..... spending more time painting than playing,. I've been videotaping the birth of this series of work . Watching as they evolve . Still, I'm missing Melynn, and Jim and Paul, and ....? Oh yeah, and YOU! Thanks to Sean and Scott for asking me to play a couple tunes , even though I felt a bit like a fish out of water surrounded by a bunch of seriously badass bluegrass musicians. BTW: The '30 thousand dollar ' guitar was worth every penny!
Dec 2004
A sad farewell to "The Still" and our good friend Rich, both of which I predict will return, but for now "there's no place like Nome...."
Nov 2004
I've spent so much time on the road this past few weeks, driving first from Seattle to New York, then Seattle to Phoenix . I had so much fun everywhere I went and can't wait to get on the road again! I'm working up some shows for Jan but sadly, will have to find a new drummer, since Kelly's eminent family expansion and work obligations have finally caught up with him. Happy trails daddy-o!
Oct 2004
We'll be playing Sat Oct 9th at Stuff Cafe 4216 6th NW, at the corner of Leary Way in Ballard. This is a very kool place run by artist /musician Michael O'Driscoll and besides serving great coffee and food, he's also got tons of weird, wonderful, collectibles everywhere. The performance space is set up like a living room or perhaps a Parlour.... We are playing with Tim and Phil who will open at 8 and then we follow at 9 and play 'til 10something. It's also Ballard's 2nd Sat Artwalk, so come early for the walk, then come enjoy some FREE music in a super cozy venue. Besides, where else can you score a "Good Bush/ Bad Bush" t-shirt?!?!?

August 28th -we're playing the 6th annual 46th St Street Party. We play after a quartet of beautiful ladies all over 65 playing accordions. Awesome!!! Hope to see some of you there playing Shots -not chutes- and Ladders, or marching in the kiddie parade. I heard there are slug races this year, too. Ewww....cool.
July 2004
Wow, summertime is in full swing. We've started work on the next album , which I swear won't take as long as the first to finish.... and I've been working on some video treatments for a couple songs from the first one. See you somewhere in the shade.
June 2004
We had a super time playing with one of our favs Baby Gramps!! Melynn rawked the house playing bass for the first time live! Stayed into the wee hours of the morn listening to Gramps and learning and loving . Love playing The Still, our home away from home.
May 2004
I'm really excited because Melynn our incredibly awesome drummer has decided to switch to bass ( and she plays keys and flute and guitar, too!?!?!) and let someone else (yeah, you Kelly!) haul drums to and from the gigs....
April 2004
Wow, what good fun we had at the Release Party! Good friends in abundance, great selections of Bourbon from Richard's stash. Not one but TWO drummers rawking the Daughter's tunes, and a HORN SECTION!!!! It was a super cool way to ease back into playing live after so long in the studio. We'll keep y'all posted on upcoming shows.
